Getting Out of Chaos: Criticism on Chinese New Curriculum Education
Abstract: When Mr. Pan Xinhe commented on Li Jinxi’s ideas upon mother tongue education, he failed to distinguish the concepts between “Yuwen” and “Guowen” referred by Li Jinxi in his work, therefore, he emphasized the need to strengthen humanity education within Chinese language teaching. Mr. Pan’s idea is rather representative among the circle of mother tongue education in our country. Ignoring the different value orientations of different teaching contents to construct a so-called “Yuwen- Utopia” can result in no achievement but make teachers and students neglect one or the other. As a matter of fact, the “Yuwen” subject should be more specialized in order to deepen the reform of mother tongue curriculum. Yuwen should be aims at develop students’language application ability, but Literature should be designed for improving students’ aesthetic ability while traditional Chinese culture should help students understand “the most profound spiritual pursuit of the Chinese People”. Perhaps instruction in sub-disciplines can find a suitable position for the “Wished Utopia” in mother tongue education.
